1. Xena: Warrior Princess — A Sapphic Classic

(1995–2001)

An ex-warlord finds love and redemption through a farm girl that joins her on her pilgramage through Ancient Greece helping the less fortunate.

From campy action scenes, to covering deep topics such as morality and redemption, ‘Xena Warrior Princess’ has been famous for pushing the boundries of its time i.e. by being the first sapphic representation that paved the way for other great lesbian couples on screen today.

The labels ‘gay’ or ‘lesbian’ are not ever stated in the series. But it is evident that Xena and Gabrielle are a couple, due to the mutiple ‘I love you’ exchanges, the fact that they live together, bathe each other, kiss more than once, sleep next to each other, are shown to be openly physically affectionate, raise a child together and even have a ‘Achorsistic’ character explicitly question them about the nature of their relationship.

The Cast and Crew have been very open about their intentions since the show ended.

In 2008, Renee also confirmed the romance, saying in an interview with AfterEllen:
‘It was very clear that we were together. They are so in love with each other, they love each other so dearly; there’s no way you can say that’s not true. Anyone can see that from watching the show.’
